Lantern Slash

Glowing paper lanterns are tossed over a night festival. Swipe to slice them before they fall, chain combos in one stroke and never cut a fireworks rocket. Everyone gets the same toss program.

Lantern Slash

It is festival night. Glowing paper lanterns are tossed up into the sky from below the festival grounds, and your blade is the only thing standing between them and the dark. Swipe through them before they fall back out of sight — but leave the fireworks rockets alone.

How to play

  1. Pick a difficulty and press Light the festival.
  2. Drag the mouse or your finger across the board. Everything the blade crosses is cut.
  3. Slice every paper lantern before it falls back below the bottom edge.
  4. Never cut a fireworks rocket (the slim teal rocket with a red nose and a sparkling trail). Left

alone, a rocket bursts harmlessly high in the sky.

  1. The run ends when all 3 lives are gone.

A lantern that falls back out of view uncut costs a life. Cutting a rocket also costs a life.

Score

Target, Points

Paper lantern, 10

Golden lantern (one in every stage), 50

Fireworks rocket, −1 life, no points

Combo: in one swipe, the 2nd lantern counts ×2, the 3rd ×3 and so on up to ×5, as long as each cut comes within 0.5 s of the previous one. One long stroke through a row of lanterns is worth far more than five short ones.

On Hard every cut is worth ×1.5 (a lantern is 15 points, a golden lantern 75). Normal and Hard have separate leaderboards. Higher is better.

Difficulty

Normal, Hard

Points per cut, ×1, ×1.5

Lanterns per wave, 1 at first, up to 8, 2 at first, up to 9

Throw speed, Gentle, rising every stage, Faster from the start, rising every stage

Fireworks rockets, From stage 3, From the first wave, more often

Lantern size (radius), 34 px, shrinking to 29 px, 32 px, shrinking to 21 px

A new stage begins every 5 waves. Lanterns fly faster, waves come closer together and more of them are in the air at once, so no run lasts forever.

One toss program for everyone

Each difficulty plays one fixed toss program: the same launch times, places, speeds and lantern types for every player (program #N-1004 on Normal, #H-1004 on Hard). Leaderboard scores therefore compare like with like, and every lantern in the program can be reached — none is ever hidden behind a rocket for its whole flight.

Controls

Action, Mouse and touch, Keyboard

Swing the blade, Drag across the board, Space (short slash through the cursor)

Aim, —, Arrow keys or WASD

Pause, Pause button, Esc or P

Keyboard play: the game can be played without a mouse or touch screen. Arrow keys or WASD move a cursor (it speeds up while you hold a direction). Space draws a short slash through the cursor along the direction you are moving, or diagonally when you stand still. You can slash again after 0.18 s.

The game pauses when its window loses focus. Sound, music, reduced motion and the interface language (English, Korean, Japanese, Chinese) can be changed at the top of the game.
