Janggi
Janggi is Korea's traditional strategy game, a cousin of chess and xiangqi. This version follows the scoring rules of the Korea Janggi Federation. Trap the opposing general to win.
Play a friend on one device, or open an online room and invite them with a code.
How to play
- Choose On one device or Play online.
- Han chooses an arrangement of horses and elephants first, then Cho. Cho moves first.
- Tap one of your pieces to see where it can go, then tap a highlighted point. You can also drag
the piece.
- Instead of moving you may Pass, except while your general is in check.

Cannon, 7, Must jump exactly one piece; never jumps or captures a cannon
Horse, 5, One point straight, then one diagonally; blocked by a piece on the way
Elephant, 3, One point straight, then two diagonally; blocked by a piece on the way
Soldier, 2, One point forward or sideways
Inside a palace, chariots, cannons and soldiers may also follow the diagonal lines. Soldiers only move diagonally forward, inside the opposing palace.
How a game ends
- Checkmate wins and resigning loses. Resigning asks for a second tap.
- Bikjang: once any piece has been captured, if the two generals face each other on one file with
nothing between them and the opponent does not break it on the next move, the points decide.
- Points: the remaining pieces are counted, and Han, the second player, gets 1.5 extra points, so
there is never a tie. Points also decide when both players agree with Decide on points, or after 400 moves.
- A move may not repeat the same position a third time, unless both sides have fewer than 30 points.
